By Glenn Ebersole One of the hot topics of discussion in the fall of 2005 is the concern about various types of flu and how people, especially those in high-risk categories, should get immunized. And I also note that there are some people talking about a possible recession in the world. So I thought we should look at immunizing our businesses against recession by using marketing tools. In researching for this article, I turned to one of my talented marketing strategy sources, Steve Hackney, the Service Business Profit Wizard, of Hackney Marketing Ltd. located in the United Kingdom. I have learned much from Steve and I most strongly agree with his advice DON’T STOP MARKETING! in any economic situation, good or bad. Steve developed what he calls recession proof service business marketing tools. I happen to believe these tools work well for other businesses too and I want to share them with you. Here are Steve Hackney’s 8 Recession Proof Service Business Marketing Tools: 1. Reactivate “dead customers” Contact past customers who you previously did work for. The quickest way is to call them and say “Hello, it’s Glenn. I’m calling just to touch base and see how you’re doing, since it’s been a few months since we last spoke.” Ask them what’s going on with their business, home etc. Don’t specifically ask them for work but end the conversation – “Well it’s been good talking with you. Continually marketing takes this problem away. 5. Experiment and test your marketing This is the only way to get more for less. Test your headlines, your offers, and your lists (the people you target). 6. Execute a postcard mailing Postcard mailings can be excellent for lead generation. One of my accountancy POWER Marketers recently got an 11% response from a lead generation postcard mailing. They’re inexpensive to produce and you pay the lowest postage rate! 7. Use broadcast fax advertising Again like all these things I’m talking about – fax broadcast should be one of your regular marketing tools. In the UK a fax can be sent for as little as 3 or 4 pence depending on the volume you send (and even less in places like the US). 20,000 faxes for example, can be sent for just ?800 (at 4 pence each). Better still that cost includes the list, and you’ve got no print cost. As long as you follow some simple (little known) advertising secrets specific to broadcast fax – you can’t go wrong! 8. Set up a planned contact strategy Make sure you’re contacting your prospects and customers at least once every 4-6 weeks and preferably once every month. Putting in place a contact strategy like this is one of the most powerful and effective things you can do. If you don’t already do this – I urge you to do it now. You won’t believe the results! By Margaret Stead Whether you have a business idea or not, heres what I want you to do I want you to take a pen and paper and go and sit somewhere quiet in your home where you will not be distracted. Get comfortable. Take a deep breath and relax for a moment. Now I want you to write down everything you WANT in life. Thats right. Everything that you wish you had in your life. It might be a new car, a house with a walled garden, some new and beautiful clothes, a swim with the dolphins, an arctic cruise, new watch, the latest Laptop, whatever Just write it down. At least twenty-five things, but it could be twenty pages long. Spend some time writing down everything that you could want in this life and desire. You can also write down things that you WANT in your relationships with other people. Such as love. You can think about the kind of relationships you have with people. Do you surround yourself with people who: Make you feel better about yourself or worse about yourself? Tend to be stronger than you or weaker than you? Are in better or worse financial shape than you? Have more real friends than you, or fewer? Place a higher value than you on honesty, integrity and commitment? So write it all down. The next thing I want you to do is to write down all the things that you feel you NEED to do. Things that you would need to do or would like to accomplish. This can range from organising the carpet cleaner to writing your will. It could be that you need to visit your Mum or set up a new email account for your business. Write it all down. Things you need to do for your business and things for your personal life just write them all down. If you can get a good unconscious flow, going, so much the better. Dont worry too much about going into detail, you can do that at a later stage. Now I want you to take a new pad of paper and write down everything that you are GOOD at, problems you can solve, things you can do. It can be driving a car or organising a meeting. It can be fixing a tap or writing articles. Think of as many things as you can and write them down. (You can put reading for ideas, as one of them, you are reading this, after all!) Keep going until you have at least twenty five. After you have brain dumped everything you are good at, you need to write down things that you LOVE doing or are interested in. So for example you might love horses, travel, parachuting, socialising with friends, persuading people or using a computer. If you find that you enjoy doing just a few things, then list those things in more detail. So, for example, if you love reading, ask yourself What books exactly categories, titles, authors, genre/ Write all of them down, as many as you can. The final thing I want you to do is to write down all the business IDEAS that you have whether its ideas for creating new products, for your existing business, running some new promotion or new ideas for a business. Write them all down. You will find that putting together combinations of what you are GOOD at and what you LOVE doing, will inspire business IDEAS for you. This way you can be sure you have explored all your potential job preferences. After you have written down all those things that you WANT (both material and relationship), everything you feel that you NEED to do and all of the business IDEAS you have then you need to start transferring these to another writing pad. You are going to create a list of the top five WANTS, NEEDS, IDEAS and the ACTIONS you can take to accomplish these. Once you have identified the TOP FIVE items in each list of WANTS, NEEDS and IDEAS, you can list ACTIONS to take for each of them. This is an easy way of PRIORITISING what you need to do to accomplish first, then second, and so on until your last item is the last thing you should be doing when everything else is accomplished. You should now have a list of your five top job or business IDEAS. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or spastic colon, is a gastrointestinal disorder that affects thousands of people. The disorder is common in men and women as well as the young and old. Statistically, almost one in five Americans suffer from IBS. It often goes completely untreated, as many patients feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to discuss its symptoms with a doctor. The disorder is a functional disorder that affects the activities of the large intestine, or colon. There is no structural abnormality in the intestines of any patient suffering from IBS. There are several main symptoms, but the main factor is discomfort caused by changes in the bowel’s habits. Symptoms of IBS include abdominal bloating, pain, cramping, constipation, and/or diarrhea. Sometimes, these symptoms will alternate. There are several types of irritable bowel syndrome. IBS-D is used to describe a patient that suffers predominantly from diarrhea. IBS-C refers to those patients that suffer predominantly from constipation, while IBS-A describes patients that suffer from an alternating pattern of diarrhea and constipation. A fourth type of IBS exists, IBS-PI (post-infectious), which is directly related to a bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal system. Causes Currently, there is no known specific cause of irritable bowel syndrome. A popular theory is that those patients that suffer from IBS have an unusually sensitive colon that reacts strongly to certain foods and even stress. In a patient with IBS, the intestine either absorbs too much liquid or too little. Additionally, the immune and nervous system may affect the symptoms or onset of IBS. Recent studies have shown a direct effect of serotonin on the activity of the intestinal system. Patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome seem to have reduced serotonin receptor activity in the intestinal tract that, in turn, causes abnormal serotonin levels within the gastrointestinal system. Furthermore, it is common for patients with IBS to also suffer from depression and anxiety. Diagnosis and Treatments In order to diagnose irritable bowel syndrome, one must visit a doctor. There is no specific test, however, other tests such as a blood test, stool sample, x-ray, sigmoidoscopy, and a colonoscopy are performed to eliminate any other disease. After a series of tests is performed, based on the patient’s symptoms, IBS may be diagnosed and treatment may begin. If one believes to be suffering from IBS, it is important to see a doctor, to at least rule out a more serious condition. Treatments for irritable bowel syndrome range from adjusting one’s diet to over the counter medications to prescription drugs like Zelnorm. By Rick Sims A nail fungus infection is a condition called onychomycosis. It is the most common nail problem with about 20 – 40 million Americans being affected. The main concern is the nail discoloration (usually yellow or brown) and change in nail texture and growth.
